Since its inception in 2001, Heartwood Place has focused on creating an interesting range of special events which will increase awareness of our organization and raised $$ to help us build and manage more affordable housing in our region. They include a wide array of themes and venues, with the hope that we can connect with a considerable number of people in our community. Some raise money through ticket sales, others through encouraging donors to contribute to participants who request their support.
The first of our events was HEARTWOOD BLUES, held in The Pavilion at Victoria Park. All of the musicians were local and we had a great time, in spite of the challenges with the acoustics. From there we have hosted the many successful Blues events with great line-ups featuring many talented musicians. HEARTWOOD BLUES has become one of the areas favourite Blues events and is known for showcasing great talent. Be sure to attend the NINTH ANNUAL HEARTWOOD BLUES on March 26 at the Newfoundland Club in Cambridge. We have an outstanding line-up – it will be a great show!
A CELEBRATION OF THE SUMMER SOLSTICE on June 21 was a new event for us in 2010. It featured Murray McLauchlan and Dennis Pendrith at the Hacienda Sarria and was a wonderful evening of marvellous music. This year’s plans are even more exciting with Steven Page, formerly of Barenaked Ladies, as the headliner. Opening for him will be Alysha Brillinger, of local renown and increasing popularity. Hosted at Federation Hall at the University of Waterloo, it’s certain to be another night to remember.
Another important event on our calendar is the AMAZING RACE FOR HEARTWOOD PLACE. Now in its SIXTH YEAR, the RACE is a day full of challenges, achievements and prizes for teams in two divisions - this year includes the ADVENTUROUS ACHIEVERS and FAMILIES AND FUNLOVERS (for those who want an easier route!). Everyone learns more about HEARTWOOD PLACE, the need for affordable housing in our community and has an opportunity to help our organization through collecting donations prior to the Race. Last year’s total exceeded $34,000! Mark September 17 on your calendar now - and read more about the Race on our website!
We also created HOMES, GARDENS & ALL THAT JAZZ in 2002 and, thanks to our accommodating hosts at Deer Ridge, we are now in the initial stages of planning for the NINTH ANNUAL HOMES, GARDENS & ALL THAT JAZZ on November 19. It is an elegantly casual evening with delicious Marché style food including beef tenderloin, a superb seafood table, many other delectable treats and a stunning chocolate fountain! There’s wonderful jazz by the Paul Stouffer Quartet and an impressive array of auction items for the home, garden and personal enjoyment. Many local businesses help us make this a wonderful success with fundraising of $35,000 in 2010.
A new event in 2010 was created by HEARTWOOD PLACE as a family activity on the Oktoberfest calendar. Held at the Rotunda in Kitchener City Hall, participants were provided a gingerbread house and invited to construct and decorate it as part of the German Village. It was great fun, including refreshments for everyone and a fair amount of candy being designated as edible instead of decorative! The judges from Oktoberfest visited and awarded HEARTWOOD PLACE a prize for Family & Cultural Events Award - Best New Event. Plans for a variation on this theme are underway for another Family Event for Oktoberfest.
It goes without saying that we have help and support from many volunteers, including dedicated Board Members, which help ensure the success of our events. We also have great contributions and donations from many local businesses. Another key aspect is outstanding coverage from local media, including generous advertising in The Waterloo Region Record and generous promotion from DAVE FM and 91.5 THE BEAT.
